Last year, BBAG consistently pursued its goal of becoming the leading
Central European brewery group and European premium fruit juice provider
to bars and restaurants. Total volume grew by 7.6%. Total sales rose
even faster at 9.0%. The number of employees fell by 6.7% in 2000. Beer
volume January-December 2000: 10.361 million hectoliters; Following our
acquisition of three breweries in Romania and two in Poland and the
establishment of a partnership agreement with yet another brewery, we
increased our market share and are now the second-largest Central European
brewery group. In Austria BBAG’s total production declined by 0.9%, even
as beer sales rose by 1.2%. In Hungary our total volume grew by 9.7% and
we increased our market share to 26.5%. The Romanian beer volume rose by
7.6% relative to the previous year. In early December, Romanian antitrust
authorities approved the acquisition of three additional breweries from
BHL: Ciuc, Haber and Grivita. At the beginning of the year, BBAG acquired
the Van Pur brewery in southern Poland. Last year, this brewery’s volume
increased by 10.9%. In the Czech Republic the discontinuation of a
mass-market brand led to increased earnings. BBAG’s primary export
markets were Italy, Slovenia and Russia. The non-alcoholic beverage
business also posted robust volume gains in 2000, rising by 12.4%.
The mineral water segment’s 12.1% growth contributed favorably to the
results of the non-alcoholic beverage business. Last year in the real
estate sector, our building and renovation plans for former operating
facilities progressed on schedule. Revenues from renting and leasing
rose by 3.5% in 2000. Primary Results: Beer sales January-December
2000: Euro 711 million, Non-alcoholic beverage sales January-December
2000: Euro 178 million; Total sales rose by 9.0% to reach Euro 922 million.
Investments (excluding acquisitions) totaled Euro 130 million. The
pretax income will remain about on par with the high previous year’s
level. In 2001, we expect significantly higher earnings and a significant
overall increase in beer volume and continued growth in the non-alcoholic
beverage business.
