BBAG
Press Conference
Vienna, August 29, 2000
First Half-Year 2000:
BBAG reached higher level than in the previous year
Total sales volume: + 6.7 %
Revenues: + 9.4 %
EBIT: + 19.9 %
PBT: + 24.2 %
Growth and realised acquisitions in the first half of 2000 reached
a higher level than in the previous year. The first half-year results
were positive due to sales increases in the beer and non-alcoholic
beverages divisions as well as an earnings increase in real estate.
Total sales volume increased by 6.7% while total turnover of nearly
EUR458 million showed a rise of 9.4%.
Operating result (EBIT) grew by almost 20%, to reach EUR 30.8 m.
Investments were 5.5% below those of the previous year, and the
number of employees dropped by 5.9%.
Beer:
Growing sales volume and revenues, expanding markets
Beer sales volume 01-06/2000: 5,044 thl
Change: +4.3%
The beer markets of Central Europe are showing ongoing growth.
BBAG was able to boost its beer sales volume by 4.3%, while its beer
revenues grew by 8%.
Austria: Reinforcement of position through targeted marketing activities.
Total sales volume in Austria grew by 1.1% in the first 6 months,
while revenues grew by 2%. Our market share was maintained at the
same high level.
Hungary: Further revenue increases reinforce our market position.
Beer sales volume in the Hungarian beer market, which has shown slight
growth, rose by 7.7%, while beer revenues grew by 15.5%. We further
increased our market share.
Romania: Expansion of market position.
The difficult economic development in Romania resulted in a decline in
beer sales volume (-8.7%) and revenue (- 8.6%) in the first half-year.
Poland: Dynamic volume growth.
Poland is a dynamic beer market, where BBAG has been represented by
2 breweries since the beginning of the year. The Van Pur brewery increased
its sales volume by 12.7%.
The brewery KUYAWIAK, of which BBAG holds 24%, has also grown in line
with expectations.
Czech Republic: Improvement of the revenue situation.
Despite a volume decrease (-4.4%), we were able to increase revenues by
9% in the competitive Czech Republic market.
Non-Alcoholic Beverages:
Strong increases in sales volume and revenues, booming markets
Revenues 01-06/2000: EUR 67,145 T Change: +32%
The decision to invest extensively in the non-alcoholic beverage sector
was also proven correct in the first half-year of 2000. Revenue increases
surpassed volume increases.
The international brand PAGO Fruchtsäfte registered another series of
successes. In total, PAGO sales volume increased by 26.2%, in France by
70%, in Italy by almost 50%, and in Spain by more than 28%. The 2nd part
of the Spanish La Selva fruit juice plant also came into operation.
Sales volume (+13.9%) and revenues (+17.1%) in the mineral water sector
also grew. Sales (+31,7%) and market share of the Gasteiner brand,
in particular, grew strongly.
Real estate and others:
Increasing revenues
Revenues 01-06/2000: EUR 7,654 T
Change: +5%
The real estate portfolio underwent consistent development. The
operating result increased. In the division “other” the Lembacher
restaurant group was sold.
Ongoing Success in the Future:
Market share gains, increase in revenues
The group result developed very positively in the first half year.
Extensive measures are planned for the second half-year in order to
support BBAG in reaching its goal of becoming one of the leading companies
in Europe’s beverage industry.
Last week’s acquisition of 3 Romanian breweries is a further sign of BBAG’s
commitment to this goal.
Furthermore, BBAG is aiming to reinforce its position in all its existing
markets. Investments are planned in the PET sector, but also within the
organisation itself (pooling of competencies and internal know-how transfer).
An effort to increase earnings and value in real estate completes the
set of measures. All these measures will ensure that BBAG will continue
to achieve positive results in the 2nd half year of 2000.
