First quarter of 2000 a success: PopNet Internet AG
exceeds revenue projections by healthy margin /
Revenues up 44% from previous quarter / Results
better than expected
The first quarter of 2000 has been a good one for
PopNet Internet AG, marked by the company’s
successful IPO and a continuation of its positive
1999 growth curve. One example was the growth in
revenue achieved by the Hamburg-based Internet
group’s subsidiary, PopNet Kommunikation GmbH & Co.,a
full-service interactive service provider. Here,
revenue went from DM 4.39 million in the final
quarter of 1999 to DM 6.3 million in the first
quarter of 2000, an increase of 44%. This was up by
more than 25% on projections for the quarter. This
growth trend has also carried over to the PopNet
workforce: staff numbers have increased from 160 at
the end of 1999 to 239 permanent employees by the end
of the first quarter of 2000.
The positive trend in revenues enjoyed by PopNet
Kommunikation GmbH & Co, KG also had an effect on
PopNet Internet AG’s earnings before interest and tax
(EBIT) This figure is in the order of DM -2.86
million. Earnings were weighed down by a number of
developments, including the opening of a new branch
office in Frankfurt and the establishment of IT
subsidiaries in Kiev (Ukraine) and Mumbai (previously
Bombay/India). Highly-qualified IT experts in those
locations are scheduled to start work by the end of
the second quarter.
PopNet Kommunikation GmbH & Co. KG has won some
important new accounts in the form of Deutsche Messe
AG, Astrium and E.ON (Veba/Viag) and has successfully
completed a number of projects, including projects
with Home Order Television (H.O.T) and comdirect
Bank. The recent opening of the branch office in
Frankfurt as well as the opening of the Munich branch
office in 1999 have played a major role in the
overall success of the Group. The Group’s strategic
partnerships have also been progressing apace,
including partnerships with D.Logistics, Intershop
and Gauss Interprise.
PopNet Agentscape AG, PopNet Internet AG’s software
powerhouse, has its sights set squarely on growth.
Its agent software product is poised to hit the
market, and its agent-based pilot platform,
FlirtMaschine (www.flirtmaschine.de) already has
around 40,000 registered users (15,000 up on original
projections) after only 4 weeks of operation. And, on
a closing note, the Group’s hybrid medium, Gold
(online and print), had its market launch at the end
of first quarter/2000. PopNet Crossmedia is right on
budget with the combined online portal and print Gold
magazine. PopNet Crossmedia aims to achieve average
annual circulation of 300,000 copies per issue. The
first issue sold 150,000 copies.
