BBAG in the first quarter 2003

First-quarter results are behind last year’s figures; favourable outlook for
pre-season after cold winter in Central Europe
The first three months, the global beverage sector and in particular the beer
industry in Central Europe had to face several constraints. Thus, the BBAG
results trended downward. Revenues totalled EUR 221.8m, a decline of 8.5%,
whereas the EBIT declined from EUR 13m in 2002 to EUR 3.4m. With the exception
of Austria, all home markets posted volume declines, in particular in the on-
trade business. The reason for that development was, besides of the overall
economic situation, unfavourable winter weather in the region. Additionally,
this year’s late Easter holidays shifted the earnings from that period to April,
means the second quarter. Including the results of the Easter business, BBAG
earnings have clearly come much closer to last year’s figures. In Austria,
Hungary, Romania and the Czech Republic, BBAG has finally implemented price
increases, in line with the recent cost development. Together with tailor-made
brand activities for the peak season, the group has herewith laid the
foundations for a successful business year 2003.
