DR. SCHELLER COSMETICS: Export Business Advancing, Domestic Sales on the Decline
Eislingen/Fils, November 20, 2003. In the period between January and September
2003, DR. SCHELLER COSMETICS AG generated gross sales in the amount of Euro
72.418 million. This is a 4.1 percent decline over the corresponding period last
year, posted in a difficult economic environment and against the backdrop of
subdued buyer confidence and a strong, sustained tendency towards private
labels. Reductions of income deducted, the company achieved net sales amounting
to Euro 57.4 million, which is a 3.8 percent decline compared to the previous
year (2002: Euro 59.656 million). Allowing for changes in inventory, operating
performance diminished slightly to Euro 59.186 million (2002: Euro 60.534
million). Period earnings and cash flow for the first three quarters followed
the sales trend: earnings decreased from Euro 323,000 to Euro 27,000; cash flow
decreased from Euro 5.81 million to Euro 113,000. The other profit variables,
EBIT and EBT, declined as well. EBIT dropped from Euro 928,000 to Euro 82,000
and EBT droped from Euro 512,000 to Euro 44,000.
Export business, by contrast, developed very favorably. With its MANHATTAN,
MANHATTAN CLEARFACE and “Apotheker Scheller-Das Naturkonzept” brands, DR.
SCHELLER COSMETICS achieved a 14 percent increase and an overall improvement
from Euro 13.021 million to Euro 13.329 million (2.4 percent) during the months
from January to September 2003. This means that domestic sales were essentially
responsible for the downward trend: Euro 44,071 million compared to Euro 46.634
million in 2002 quantifies as a 5.5 percent decline. If distribution adjustment
is taken into account, however, the company was nonetheless able to achieve a
slight increase of 0.4 percent.
In addition to the economic situation, buyer demand, and the trend towards
private labels, the unusually hot summer also contributed to consumer
resistance. In general, markedly fewer consumers used make-up products during
the heat wave, which lasted from July to September.
