The government of South Africa has decided to extend its position in the diamond polishing industry. Approximately twelve percent of all rough diamonds are discovered in South Africa. The cape republic is fourth biggest producer in the world as measured by the value of the stones. However, nearly the majority of the diamond treatment takes place abroad. Barely 2,000 people are working in the polishing industry of South Africa. The precious stones are mostly treated in India, Belgium or Israel. In order to strengthen this specific branch of industry the government of South Africa plans to establish by law a government regulated diamond merchant who controls the import and export of the stones. Besides, part of the local production should be bought for the South African polishing industry at a 'reasonable price'. It is also expected to charge a fee on the export of rough diamonds. 'The endeavours of the South African government to expand the local polishing and jewellery industry are to be appreciated', explains James Lehman. 'The government is currently anxious to create more jobs in their country. Only the required infrastructure and know how is still missing – especially in the area of marketing and distribution', continues Lehman. As CEO from the diamond explorer company Central Kimberley Diamonds and director of the Lost River Diamonds Pty. Ltd, a company focussed on the distribution of diamonds, James Lehman is specialised on all topics concerning the complete diamond value-added chain. Distribution and marketing of diamonds are part of his core competence. An internationally wide spread contact network is at his disposal. In honour to this competence the South African government now has put him in charge of counselling within building of a polishing industry in the country. In order to deepen his contacts to members of governments and other organisations, James Lehman participated in this years´ trade fair Mining Indaba. 'With over 3,000 delegates from 50 countries and with 170 exhibitors, this trade fair is the most important international platform in the mining sector and the ideal place to sustain and develop our network', so James Lehman concluding. Central Kimberley Diamonds therefore was able not only to establish itself as a mining company but also to exert influence on the development of the diamond business in the Cape republic as a strategic partner of the South African government.
