Altogether, including last weeks discovery, 6 gem quality diamonds were recovered from the north pit gravel. The average size of the diamonds is over 1 carat with the largest stone recorded at 1.26 carats. The diamonds were discovered at the second pit (north), located about two kilometres from the original diamond discovery site. The basal gravels from this pit have now been removed and subsequently treated. An additional 4,000 tonnes of upper gravel and 6,000 tonnes of middle gravel have been stockpiled for treatment from this north pit. A thick layer of gravel on the southern side of the north pit has been exposed during the recent excavations. According to Ross Brown, Central Kimberley Diamonds geologist, 'Pilot holes in this south section of the pit have exposed a thick sequence of basal gravels that are considered highly prospective for diamonds. This gravel is located at the deepest part of the palaeo-channel which is the most favourable location for diamonds enrichment.' James Lehman, CEO of Central Kimberley Diamonds, commented on the latest discovery: 'We are delighted with this new discovery, which yet again confirms we are on the right track. Additionally we have completed an in-house review of our excavation operations and part of our strategy will now be to significantly improve treatment capacities, sources of power supply, earthmoving management and concentrate handling.' In light of this statement two 30 tonnes dump trucks have now been purchased. Furthermore a 'Desanding Screen' is being constructed to remove excess sand particles from the gravels before being introduced into the concentration plant, too much sand can hinder the effectiveness of the treatment plant thus a sand screen will improve the overall efficiency of plant. These operations will be carried out prior to treatment of the southern pits basal gravels.
