ENTRADE Energiesysteme AG: research cooperation agreed between the University of Zittau-Görlitz and the University of Hawaii
DGAP-News: ENTRADE Energiesysteme AG / Key word(s): Alliance 24.07.2014 / 13:17 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Zittau. - The University of Zittau-Görlitz, scientific partner to ENTRADE Energiesysteme AG in the field of electricity generated from wood, has now concluded a research cooperation with the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. The aim of the cooperation is the transfer of know-how in the fields of climate conservation and renewable energies, as well as the training of personnel in Hawaii who will in future plan, set up and operate biomass facilities which meet the requirements of the individual location. The cooperation came into being thanks to the services of ENTRADE AG. There are plans for the construction of several facilities offering an overall electrical output of approximately 200 kW on the island of Oahu near the capital Honolulu. These will utilise existing biomass resources, with woodchips being used for the generation of energy for heating and cooling purposes. Biomass can play a major role in enabling energy self-sufficiency "We look forward to the exchange of information and close cooperation with the University of Zittau", states Richard Rocheleau, Director of the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute at the University of Hawaii. "This development could play a major role in enabling the islands to meet their potential for the generation of energy from biomass". Because of the proliferation of the white leadtree, a fast-growing, non-native species which can reach a height of 18 m, Hawaii has a huge surplus of biomass. Major efforts are taking place to counteract the proliferation of this tree, which can be used for energy-generation purposes. Because the island state does not have any oil or gas resources of its own and has to import more than 75% of its energy requirements, electricity costs in Hawaii are among the highest in the world at around 40 cents per kW. Because of its remote location in the middle of the Pacific this is due not least to the high transport costs involved. At the same time, the existing biomass resources of the islands have so far not been utilised to the full. As a financing partner ENTRADE AG invests in responsible and sustainably-oriented energy supply concepts. In Europe its participations have made the company a leading supplier of energy concepts on the basis of solid biomass. For further information please see www.entrade.de.
