The business model ENTRADE Energiesysteme AG produces a micro power station which generates electricity, heating and cooling from previously unused solid biomass and waste materials. The generator – entitled the “E3” – has been developed in-house by the corporation at a cost of 55 million euros (63 million dollars). Plants are already operating successfully in Germany, England, Scotland, Austria and the USA. Over the coming months there will be a major expansion in production which will see a move from small-scale to full series production. The E3 is the world’s smallest power station. Fuelled by biomass pellets its high-temperature reactor generates a synthesis gas, which in turn drives an internal combustion motor. This generates a rated electrical output of 25 kW and thermal output of 60 kW or cooling output of 30 kW. Compared with other energy generating sources, either conventional or renewable, the power provided by the E3 is internationally competitive. This power can be consumed locally or fed into the public grid, while the thermal energy which is generated can be used for heating or cooling purposes.
