FRIEDRICH VORWERK wins major contract for the realization of large sections of the EWA natural gas transmission pipeline in the high double-digit million range Tostedt, 14 November 2024 – Friedrich Vorwerk Group SE (ISIN DE000A255F11), a leading provider in the field of energy infrastructure, has been awarded a major contract by transmission system operator Open Grid Europe (OGE) as part of a joint venture for the realization of one of two construction lots of the EWA natural gas transmission pipeline. The contract for the approximately 24 km long section has a total volume in the high double-digit million range and will be realized by a joint venture consisting of the FRIEDRICH VORWERK Group (Friedrich Vorwerk and Bohlen & Doyen) and the Austrian HABAU Group (PPS Pipeline Systems and HABAU). Following the acquisition of significant parts of the Süddeutsche Erdgastransportleitung (SEL) in June, the joint venture has thus secured its next major project, ensuring a sustainably high utilization of the specialized capacities in the pipeline construction sector. The underground natural gas transport pipeline EWA planned by the transmission system operator Open Grid Europe runs between the natural gas storage facility in Etzel and the compressor station in Wardenburg. Along a distance of around 60 km, it will transport natural gas from the LNG terminal in Wilhelmshaven to the German long-distance gas grid. Initial work has already begun, with commissioning planned for the end of 2025. The pipeline forms the first section of the planned Etzel-Wardenburg-Drohne pipeline. The second, directly adjacent section from Wardenburg in Lower Saxony to Drohne in North Rhine-Westphalia (WAD) covers a length of around 90 km and is to be realized immediately after completion of the EWA by the end of 2026. The WAD is also scheduled to be awarded at short notice. The entire Etzel-Wardenburg-Drohne transmission pipeline will make an important contribution to Germany’s sustainable security of supply and the energy transition, as it is already designed for the transport of hydrogen. In view of the need to connect numerous new gas power plants to the existing natural gas grid as well as the planned realization of the 9,040 km long hydrogen core network (“Kernnetz”), a large number of different new construction and conversion measures are currently being planned by the gas transmission network operators and will soon be implemented. Due to its broad service and technology portfolio and decades of experience in the field of qualified pipeline construction, FRIEDRICH VORWERK expects demand in this area to remain strong in the future.
