Global Dynamix Solutions GB PLC: GLOBAL DYNAMIX SOLUTIONS ANNOUNCES SUCCESSFUL LED LIGHTING PILOT PROJECTS IN HAWAIIAN SCHOOLS
Global Dynamix Solutions GB PLC / Key word(s): Miscellaneous 28.03.2011 / 10:00 Mt. Clemens, MI-- Kahili Kai Elementary of Honolulu and Kihei Charter School of Maui have completed successful LED lighting pilot projects that prove benefits of long term savings, improved light quality and improved energy independence. Both schools see the retrofits as responsible action to address soaring energy rates as well as an opportunity to teach sustainability by example. The retrofits exclusively utilized products from Michigan-based LED lighting manufacturer Clean Light Green Light (CLGL), a U.S. subsidiary of Global Dynamix Solutions GB PLC. In this first phase, Kahili Kai retrofitted their exterior lighting which consisted of 26 Watt compact fluorescents (CFL) with CLGL 11Watt LED CFL retrofit bulbs. With a minimum 50,000 hour light life and fifty (50) percent less energy use, the CLGL LED bulbs will provide over a 400% return on investment as well as reduce the school's carbon footprint by 108 tons over their lifetime. Principal Stanley Kayatani shared that the K-5 school curriculum includes learning and practicing the 3 R's - reduce, reuse, and recycle. The LED retrofit was one of several Kahili Kai initiatives to reduce energy consumption which qualified the school for Department of Energy (DOE) rebates. 'Rather than expending these rebates on items not related to energy conservation, I decided to explore possibilities to reinvest them into other energy savings measures.' stated Kayatani. After engaging in LED lighting research, he contacted Pacific LED and Energy Corporation (PL&E), Clean Light Green Light's exclusive distributor in Hawaii, who provided the LEDs and executed the retrofit. Kayatani feels the school will serve as a model not only for other schools but possibly for the entire DOE. He is looking into potential public/private partnerships with the Honolulu District and the State of Hawaii as he believes the LEDs represent an affordable investment resulting in lower overhead costs for schools and business and provide a means to help preserve their beautiful environment by reducing the use of fossil fuels. On Maui, Kihei Charter School retrofitted the 32 Watt 4 foot fluorescent tubes in their classrooms with CLGL 15 Watt ballast-free LED tubes. When asked about what prompted him to look into LED lighting, Kihei Dean Gene Zarro shared 'Lighting is important to the effectiveness of a learning environment. The LEDs not only produce a better quality light for students and faculty to work under, they are also less expensive to run and do not produce the heat the other lights emitted reducing our energy costs and in turn our dependence on fossil fuels. As a school we must model responsible behavior and this is the responsible thing to do.' He went on to say that that the lights are saving money and like most schools, they can always use more money! He is looking forward to installing more CLGL LEDs as the school continues remodeling and expanding. Kia Kamauu, COO of Pacific LED and Energy Corporation that provided the CLGL LEDs for both projects shared that in addition to adopting a mercury-free lighting option, both school retrofits are consistent with Hawaiian initiatives to reduce energy consumption in the state, which has the highest kilowatt hour rates in the U.S. Currently, 90% of all energy consumed in Hawaii is derived from imported oil. The Hawaiian Clean Energy Initiative (HCEI), a partnership program with the U.S. DOE, has set goals to achieve 70% clean energy sources within one generation. Both CLGL CEO David McKinney and Hawaii's PL&E COO, Kia Kamauu, agree that LED lighting will play a significant role in both the public and private sectors' ability to achieve their energy and operational efficiency goals. 'The school sector has been particularly hard hit with the recent economic challenges reducing U.S. state budgets, and it is gratifying to provide a practical option as simple as changing light bulbs that positively impacts both the learning environment and the budget challenges schools are facing', shares CEO McKinney. With additional school pilots amongst the various projects in progress, PL&E's ventures in Hawaii exemplify the quickly evolving adoption of LEDs in the real world.
