(OTCBB: PTEO; WKN: 925981) and its wholly-owned subsidiary Proteo Biotech AG announced today: Following the recommendation of the European Medicines Agency EMEA, the European Commission has granted Orphan Drug Designation for the protease inhibitor Elafin, developed by Proteo, to be used in the treatment of oesophagus carcinoma. Orphan Drug Designation of the European Commission assures exclusive marketing rights for the treatment of this disease within the European Union for a period of up to ten years after receiving market approval. Additionally, registration as an Orphan Drug enables accelerated marketing approval in all member states of the European Union. In a Phase I clinical trial it was demonstrated that Elafin was very well tolerated. The substance is currently under investigation in a Phase II clinical trial on patients undergoing oesophagectomy for the treatment of oesophagus carcinoma.
