debitel’s customer base grows by 300%
Stuttgart. August 30, 2000. In the first half of this year, debitel’s
customer base in Germany grew by over 1.3 million subscribers to a total
of about 4.5 million, meaning that the company now has over 300% more
customers than a year ago. Its market share is about 14%. The strategic
focus is on gaining new customers. In this way debitel intends to further
improve its already favorable starting position for the future UMTS market.
In the whole of Europe the number of subscribers to debitel’s services
increased by 63% to 6.3 million. Not only the customer base expanded,
but also revenues: they were 33% higher at Euro 1,170 million compared
with Euro 878 million in the first half of last year. This enormous
growth had an impact on earnings. The gross margin grew by 26% to
Euro 170 million (1st half of 1999: Euro 135 million), but the Group’s
EBIT for the first half was lower at Euro 24 million (1st half of 1999:
Euro 36 million).
Revenues in Germany rose by 48% to Euro 872 million (1st half of 1999:
Euro 588 million), with domestic mobile telephony services generating
most of revenues and earnings. Revenues in Germany increased by 48%
to Euro 835 million (1st half of 1999: Euro 563 million). EBIT in Germany
was maintained at last year’s level. This is due to an improvement in
EBIT in the segments of fixed-line telephony to -Euro 4 million
(1st half of 1999: – Euro 6 million) and the Internet to – Euro 1 million
(1st half of 1999: – Euro 3 million). The acquisition costs caused by
the above-average growth rose to Euro 99 million from Euro 52 million a
year ago. However, in the mobile-telephony segment EBIT was stable at
Euro 41 million (1st half of 1999: Euro 45 million).
debitel is pushing forward with its mobile portal product development.
This area of business is one of the most important success factors for
the future and one of the main differentiating features in the competition
for mobile-phone subscribers. In this context debitel will also increasingly
concentrate on the sector of e/m-commerce and the associated expansion
of mobile-phone use. This also includes activities and partnerships in
the areas of payment transactions and banking services.
In fixed-line telephony revenues and subscribers increased slightly. At
the end of June, a contract was concluded with Tesion as a second supplier
of fixed-line services. This will improve the profitability of the debitel
fixed-line products in the second half of the year. In this segment debitel
achieved an 18% increase in revenues compared with the first half of last
year (from Euro 22 million to Euro 25 million).
In the Internet business both the customer base and earnings figures developed
promisingly. There was 27% subscriber growth in this segment and revenues rose
by 200%. debitel sold its stake in berlin.de, the regional online service for
Germany’s capital city.
In the international business revenues and earnings did not develop as well as
expected. The more intense competition caused by the increasing saturation of
international markets led to below-target earnings, particularly in the
Netherlands. Business outside Germany contributed – Euro 12 million to the
Group’s EBIT (1st half of 1999: – Euro 0.8 million).
The success of the company caused a significant increase in the size of the
workforce. As of June 30, debitel employed 2,740 people in the whole of Europe.
This is 17% more than a year before. In the year to June 30, debitel
created 216 new jobs in its European markets. The search for qualified
employees is one of our biggest challenges. Particularly in the area of
customer care it was virtually impossible to obtain qualified people at
the existing locations of Stuttgart, Ettlingen and Saarbrücken.
For this reason debitel will open a fourth call center in Kaiserslautern
at the end of this year.
