The sender is solely responsible for the contents of this announcement. ——————————————————————————– Gontard & MetallBank AG achieves a profit before taxes of 7.9 million euros in the first quarter of the business year 2000/2001 Frankfurt am Main, 15 February 2001 – Gontard & MetallBank AG, Frankfurt am Main, made a 7.9 million euros profit before taxes in the first quarter (01.10.2000 – 31.12.2000) of its business year 2000/2001 (01.10.2000 – 30.09.2001), compared to 14.8 million euros for the same period of the previous year. The result after taxes was 4.4 million euros, compared to 8.1 million euros in the first quarter of the previous year. This decrease can be attributed to the deteriorating situation in the capital markets and to the ensuing trading losses. Performance by the Investment Banking division, however, clearly exceeded expectations. Of the profit before taxes, 6.4 million euros was contributed by the Investment Banking division, 2.4 million euros was contributed by the Asset Management division and 0.7 million euros was contributed by the Corporate Centres. Trading reflected the difficult market conditions, with a negative result of -1.6 million euros. A continued widening of margins saw net interest income rise from 4.1 million euros in the first quarter of the previous year to 4.7 million euros. Net commission income increased by 11.9 million euros to 18.6 million euros. Net price gains and losses from trading amounted to a loss of -4.7 million euros compared to a profit of 13.4 million euros during the same period of the previous year. Administrative expenses increased in comparison to the first quarter of the previous year from 9.6 million euros to 10.7 million euros. The cost/income ratio rose to 57.6 percent in line with the overall reduction of income.
