Mio. Euro zu.
Stinnes Boasts Record Performance in 1999
In fiscal 1999, Group sales when adjusted for divested
businesses increased by 4 percent to Euro 11.76 billion. The
activities sold by Stinnes include the Tire Service business and
the Wilson Group’s air & sea freight operations, which Stinnes
obtained when it took over BTL.
The internal operating profit increased by 35 percent from Euro
133 million to Euro 180 million. This was mainly due to the very
good performance of the Chemicals Division and the turnaround
achieved in the Building Materials Division. Consolidated
earnings before taxes (EBT) increased by 32 percent from Euro 125
million to Euro 165 million. This was the highest result ever
achieved by Stinnes in the 192 years of the company’s history.
The consolidated net income after taxes and after minority
interests amounted to Euro 98 million, which was 150 percent
higher than in the previous year.
The balance sheet profit after transfers to retained earnings
amounts to Euro 46.9 million. On June 8, the Board of Management
of Stinnes will propose to the annual meeting of stockholders a
dividend of Euro 0.50 per share to be distributed. For the second
half of 1999, this leads to a dividend yield of 3.5 percent.
In fiscal 1999, Stinnes increased its investments by 18.4 percent
to Euro 676 million, most of which was spent in the
Transportation and Chemicals divisions. Despite this increase in
investments, Stinnes continued to improve its balance sheet
structure. The gearing i.e. the ratio of interest-bearing debt
less liquid funds to equity improved from 104 percent to 98
percent, owing to an active portfolio management policy and the
divestment of non-operating assets.
Due to the divestment of the Tire Service business and the Wilson
Group, the workforce of Stinnes at year-end decreased by 7.6
percent from 47,502 to 43,885 employees.
Schenker recorded sales of Euro 5.2 billion in 1999 (1998: Euro
5.3 billion). The company’s internal operating profit decreased
by 26 percent to Euro 90 million, primarily due to much higher
goodwill amortization and interest payments for the acquisition
of the remaining shares of BTL.
The sales of Brenntag increased by 10 percent to Euro 2.3
billion, and Brenntag’s internal operating profit rose by 56
percent to Euro 71 million.
While the sales of Stinnes Interfer decreased by 14 percent, the
company’s internal operating profit increased by 7 percent to
Euro 31 million, due also to the utilization of potential
synergies from the combination of the steel and raw materials
activities.
Raab Karcher Baustoffe achieved the turnaround earlier than had
been expected: The Division’s internal operating profit improved
from minus Euro 18 million to plus Euro 15.7 million.
The sales of Stinnes Intertec increased by 10.2 percent to Euro
189.8 million, and the internal operating profit rose by 24
percent to Euro 13.8 million.
