Issuer’s information/explanatory remarks concerning this ad hoc announcement:
Press Release
WORLD OF MEDICINE opens up the Asian market through an exclusive distribution
agreement for China with a volume of min. 3.24 mio. EUR
The innovative FREDDY laser technology is gaining world-wide acceptance /
Distribution channel is also used for the products of Flow&FluidWORLD and
VisionWORLD
(Berlin, 18 June 2001). Today, W.O.M. WORLD OF MEDICINE AG, a specialist for
device technology for minimally invasive surgery, could announce an exclusive
distribution agreement for China with the AIM company. The agreement guarantees
AIM the exclusive distribution rights for the U100 laser for the treatment of
calculus in China. Up to 2004, AIM shall take delivery of min. 98 lasers plus
accessories. This is equivalent to a volume of min. 3.24 mio. EUR (excluding
accessories). In addition the products from the Flow&FluidWORLD and VisionWORLD
business sectors shall be introduced through these distribution channels.
Through this co-operation, WORLD OF MEDICINE which has been listed on Neuer
Markt since 13 June is opening up the Asian market earlier than expected. In
Asia, there are huge chances for minimally invasive surgery as this region is
leaving out several steps of the development in medicine. Since minimally
invasive operations are valuable under national economy aspects as well due to
cost reductions, there is a great demand for minimally invasive device
technology in the price-sensitive countries of this Asian region.
Through this distribution in China, WORLD OF MEDICINE has gained access to a
promising market with 1.3 billion inhabitants. In the greater area of Shanghai
alone, there is a potential of approx. 700 urological clinics. One U100 laser
is already being used at the renowned Remjy Clinic. In this hospital alone,
1400 stones are treated every year. In a German clinic, this number is roughly
200-300 cases per year.
Due to the low acquisition and maintenance costs as well as shortened treatment
times and hospital stays, the treatment of stones with the U100 laser is much
more cost-favourable than the ESWL treatment which was most often used before.
This supports the efforts of the governments and health insurance companies to
reduce costs in the public health sector.
The practical experiences made with the U100 laser in more than 12 months of
clinical tests at the university of Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany have shown
that surgery with the pioneering FREDDY laser technology is easy, safe,
effective and gentle on the patient. For WORLD OF MEDICINE, one of the pioneers
of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), the success of the new U100 laser means
international recognition and great growth potentials for the coming years.
Because in Germany alone there are approx. 2.5 mio people every year falling
ill with bladder calculus or ureteral calculus, among them more than 300,000
patients needing acute care. Considering the fact that every illness causes the
disablement of the patient for 90 days on an average, this has very negative
effects not only for the patients affected, but also for the total national
economy.
The W.O.M. WORLD OF MEDICINE AG group of companies, with headquarters in
Ludwigsstadt/Oberfranken, currently comprises subsidiaries in Berlin,
Gröbenzell/Munich as well as Orlando/USA. It has a total staff of more than 270
and is structured into three business sectors: Flow&FluidWORLD (fluid pumps,
insufflators, accessories), LaserWORLD (lasers for MIS) and VisionWORLD
(cameras, monitors, light sources, image editing systems). Sales last year
amounted to approximately 23.6 mio. EUR. In 2001, this figure shall grow to
33.6 mio. EUR. The EBIT in 2000 reached approx. 1.7 mio. EUR. For the current
year, an increase to approximately 2 mio. EUR is expected.
