WORLD OF MEDICINE welcomed the new fiscal year by achieving solid improvement
in its earnings. The company posted earnings of EUR 338 thousand, corresponding
to an increase of 370 % compared to the first quarter of last year (EUR 72
thousand). With an EBIT of EUR 499 thousand, the company has already achieved,
in only its first quarter, 80% of the EBIT achieved for the entire year 2001.
This margin increase is the result, in particular, of a remarkable improvement
in earnings by the LaserWORLD division and the high margin achieved by the
Flow&FluidWORLD division. Revenues increased by 15 %. Due in large part to
growing Asian markets, the ROW’s (Rest Of World) share of sales increased to 18
% compared to last year (11 %). The Group’s high level of orders which stands
at EUR 8.2 million and minimum supply contracts for 2002 worth EUR 6 million
ensure that the company will achieve its sales goals for the entire year.
Revenues for 2002 should increase by more than 30 %, from EUR 30.4 million in
2001 to approximately EUR 40 million. A pronounced increase in the EBIT is
expected in 2002, from EUR 0.6 million in 2001 to approximately EUR 3 million.

The Board of Management
end of ad-hoc-announcement (c)DGAP 15.05.2002
Issuer’s information/explanatory remarks concerning this ad-hoc-announcement:
Development of the business divisions
The Flow&FluidWORLD business sector (insufflators and pump systems for the
controlled distension of body cavities) posted sales of EUR 6.1 million, an
increase of 13 % compared to last year (EUR 5.4 million). Credit is due in
large part to the new generation of laparoscopic insufflators, recently
launched into the European market. The EBIT of
EUR 954 thousand (EUR 607 thousand) corresponds to an significantly higher EBIT
margin of 16 % (11 %).
Sales of EUR 1.1 million in the VisionWORLD business sector (cameras, light
sources, monitors and video documentation systems for MIS) underperformed last
year’s sales level (EUR 1.2 million). As expected, the EBIT was negative at
minus EUR 302 thousand compared to the same period last year (EUR 67 thousand).
However, at the end of March WORLD OF MEDICINE was granted FDA approvals for
two of its cameras which can now be sold to new and existing clients in the
USA. Based on higher productivity levels and new measures to improve its cost
structure, the company estimates an improvement in sales and earnings for
VisionWORLD in the second half of the year.
The innovative LaserWORLD business sector (patented U100 Laser for lithotripsy
and laser beam sources for the medical and industrial branches) achieved sales
of EUR 1.1 million in the first three months of the year, an increase of 75%
over last year (EUR 0.6 million) Laser beam sources accounted for EUR 0.8
million of this amount. Subsidiary IBL broke even during the first quarter
thanks to a marked leap in sales, thus contributing to the solid earnings
increase of LaserWORLD. Losses before interest and taxes of EUR 153 thousand
were reduced significantly compared to last year (EUR- 351 thousand).
The company closed on a new sales contract for the U100 laser with a volume of
more than EUR 4 million through 2004. Seven U100 lasers were billed in the
first quarter, corresponding to sales of EUR 0.3 million. The company had an
additional 47 orders for the U100 laser on hand as of March 31, 2002.
Outlook
An important milestone in the fiscal year’s second quarter will be the American
Urology Congress (AUA) in May – which will take place in Orlando, Florida, USA.
In the VisionWORLD division, FDA approvals for a light source and monitor are
expected in the third quarter. In addition, more products will be launched this
year such as the new generation of flat screen monitors for the medical branch,
and the Uropower, a device which auto-diagnoses urologic disorders.
