Ad Hoc Press Release of Winter AG’s final results to 31.12.2002
Olching near Munich, 12 March 2003
Winter AG, a leading producer of systems and chipcards, published its final
results for the 2002 financial year today. Sales for the twelve months to 31
December 2002 totalled Euro 43.3 million, compared to Euro 44.2 million in the
prior year. EBIT decreased from Euro 0.8 million in the 2001 financial year to
minus Euro 7.3 million in financial 2002. The net loss for the year amounted to
Euro 7.5 million (2001: net profit of Euro 0.4 million). Earnings per share
were minus Euro 1.23 (prior year: positive Euro 0.06); headcount was 316
employees (prior year: 327). The shareholders’ equity base was 53.7% and Euro
20.4 million.
For the year 2003 Winter AG expects sales of Euro 44.2 million and negative EBIT
of minus Euro 2 million. Restructuring measures will be concluded in 2003 and
create the basis for earnings’ improvement. In 2004 Winter AG aims to return to
profitability. The reason for the fall in revenues was, in particular, the
decrease in Card Services’ sales in the last quarter of 2002 due mainly to the
general state of the economy. The negative EBIT was especially caused by extra-
ordinary write-downs and risk management efforts, which were provided for
because of a risk analysis conducted in line with the German Act for Controlling
and Transparency in Companies (KonTraG). In addition, the company initiated
its first restructuring measures, which certainly burdened earnings in the 2002
financial year.
In the Cards division – with the lion’s share of sales at 58.7% (prior year:
55%) – turnover increased from Euro 24.3 million in 2001 to Euro 25.4 million in
the past financial year. On the other hand, revenues in the Card Service’s
division fell from Euro 19.1 million (43.2% of sales) in 2001 to Euro 16.7
million (38.5% of sales) in the 2002 financial year. Turnover in the IT
Security division rose from Euro 0.8 million (1.8%) in 2001 to Euro 1.3 million
in 2002, representing 3% of total revenues for the year.
