Malmö, April 10, 2006 – The first quarter of this year has been very
eventful at Obducat. The order intake is SEK 20 million. In addition to the
break-through order for Obducat’s NIL-technology, (Nano Imprint
Lithography) for a customer in the US for mass production purposes, Obducat
has also received an order from a Korean institute. Furthermore, Lund
University has placed an order for two NIL machines, and as part of the
order a development licence is included. CEO Patrik Lundström foresees a
bright future ahead.
The order to the Korean institute consists of an 8”machine for development
of future displays based on LCD technology. Due to the Obducat Soft Press
technology it is possible to make a very detailed pattern transfer even if
the substrate is square or rectangular, as often is the case in e.g. the
display industry.
‘This is the first 8” machine that we sell. The machine is unique in the
world, as the imprint surface is square. The Korean Institute of Technology
(KITECH) is one of the leading institutes in South Korea. KITECH has a very
strong connection to the leading electronics manufacturers in South Korea,
something we find very positive for the future’ says CEO Patrik Lundström.
Help to Start-up companies in Lund
The Division of Solid State Physics at Lund University will have three NIL
machines after the purchase of the two above mentioned machines, one 6” and
one 3”. Obducat also includes a development licence regarding a NIL process
called STU (Simultaneous Thermal and UV), developed by Obducat. Lund
University will among other things pursue research and development in a
laboratory now under construction in a new building. The NIL machines are
one part of the investment the Division of Solid State Physics makes in
order to renew and enhance the prerequisites of the ongoing research. The
laboratory will also be made available to new companies in the region who
focus on developing electronic components in the nanotechnology area. These
Start-up companies will have the opportunity to manufacture prototypes with
help from the laboratory.
Nano imprint continues to gain recognition
At the beginning of the year, Obducat participated in the world’s largest
nanotechnology exhibition held in Japan. Obducat was the only NIL actor
performing demonstrations on a NIL machine during the three days of the
exhibitions. Many contacts were made to companies active in the consumer
electronics industry, mainly from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and China.
During the same week in February, a conference, SPIE, was held in San José,
focusing on lithography for the semiconductor industry. Nano imprint
continues to gain recognition. This means that the nano imprint improves
its position in regards to manufacturing of semiconductors. Obducat is
today the only NIL supplier to have a customer who pursues commercial
manufacturing with the NIL technology. Presently, it seems as if it will be
components for opto-electronics that will be the first area to enter into
mass production with the NIL technology.
