Globalstar Europe Satellite Services Ltd. Provides Norwegian Government & Farmers With Tracking Capability for Thousands of Livestock
Globalstar, Inc. 11.10.2012 10:00 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tracking Collar Proves Essential to the Health and Wellbeing of Norwegian Sheep Herds DUBLIN, Ireland, 2012-10-11 10:00 CEST (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Globalstar Europe Satellite Services Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Globalstar, Inc. (Nasdaq:GSAT) and a leading provider of mobile satellite voice and data services to businesses, governments and consumers, today announced that in conjunction with Findmysheep AS, a leading European Value Added Re-seller (VAR), it is providing a tracking solution to the Norwegian Government on over 2,000 sheep. Using the Globalstar STXII satellite transmitter, Findmysheep AS have developed a specially enhanced collar which can be placed on the sheep and used for tracking the animals as they roam the countryside. With several hundred sheep going missing each year, the Norwegian government has part-funded an initiative to track farmers livestock so they can understand what is driving the disappearances and eliminate any foul play. This funding has enabled Findmysheep AS to develop not only this highly adaptive collar, but a back-office which enables the farmer to visualise the whereabouts of the animals at any given time. When it is apparent that a sheep has not moved in some time, the farmer is now able to deploy herders to the exact location of the animal, saving valuable time and resources. The collar and supportive software has been successfully tested for the last 6 months on over 2,000 sheep. Full deployment will now begin across Norway, with an estimated 6,000 animals being tracked in the not too distant future. 'We are delighted Findmysheep AS chose Globalstar and our STXII chip-set for this initial trial and are very much looking forward to facilitating the roll-out of this solution throughout Norway and further afield', said Mark O'Connell, Director European Sales & Business Operations. Globalstar is currently planning to launch six additional LEO (low-earth orbit) satellites in early February 2013, completing its second-generation satellite launches. The Globalstar second-generation satellite constellation is designed to support the Company's current line-up of voice, Duplex and Simplex M2M data products and services including its suite of SPOT retail consumer products.
