UFC Holding N.V.: UFC forests remain unharmed from snow disaster in China
UFC Holding N.V. / Miscellaneous Release of a Corporate News, transmitted by DGAP - a company of EquityStory AG. Since mid January 2008 the 18 provinces and cities in south China have suffered from ice rain, heavy snow and storms. However, UFC territories Hubei (Shishou base), Jiangxi (Jiujiang base) and Hunan (Li country base) are still growing normally and did not suffer any damage from this weather. Reasons for this positive development are the geographic locations of UFC wood and forestry territories (UFC regions have not been exposed to extremely bad ice rain which is the main cause for disasters) and the cultivated tree species poplars. The poplars hardly accumulate snow on the tree branch because they have no leafs in winter and are regularly pruned. Additionally, the poplars in UFC territories are basically adult trees which means that the stems and branches are robust enough to resist the snow fold. Professor Luo, expert of Hubei Shishou Populus Research Institute, points out that the heavy snow has not resulted in any loss but rather in several benefits as the long time of heavy snow has: • frozen the pest to death which lives on the leafs of the trees and therefore lowered the insect base for the upcoming year • fertilized the woodland soil and improved the soil physical structure • enhanced the water holding of the woodland soil and lessened the harm of drought and • provided the moisture which guarantees for the high survival of afforestation. In the meantime, the State Forestry Administration announced that the overall snow disaster will result in a shortage of timber supply due to the wood damage which will influence the timber industry in the following years. The timber price will consequently soar with the shortage of timber, also increasing the value of UFC forest projects.
