Lipper Fund Awards 2017 – BAKER STEEL successful again in Equity Sector Gold and Precious Metals

BAKERSTEEL Precious Metals Fund has two years in a row been awarded Best Fund over 3 Years and in 2017 also over 5 Years, Equity Sector Gold and Precious Metals, for Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland and Europe.

The two awards recognise the success of Baker Steel’s investment team, led by David Baker and Trevor Steel, in achieving superior performance in their management of BAKERSTEEL Precious Metals Fund’ The Fund’s A2 EUR share class returned +94.3% during 2016, compared with the Euromoney Global Gold Index which rose +61.0% and gold which rose +13.1% (in Euro terms).

BAKERSTEEL Precious Metals Fund is a Luxembourg UCITS sub-fund with a long-only gold equities investment strategy. The Fund’s investment approach is disciplined, bottom-up and actively managed by Baker Steel’s three person investment team, all of whom have extensive technical expertise in the mining sector as well as multi-cycle investment experience.

Gold and gold equities emerged as one of the best performing asset classes of 2016, as a number of fundamental factors caused the metal to enter a new bull market. Central banks’ actions to spur growth, in particular the implementation of low or negative interest rates, stoked demand for gold and tested investors’ faith in policymakers and their ability to boost economic activity. Safe haven demand for gold during 2016 was driven by heightened geopolitical concerns during a year characterised by rising populist sentiment around the world, which most notably resulted in the UK’s extraordinary “Brexit” referendum and the election of Donald Trump to the US Presidency. Gold and precious metals equities have proven to be an effective portfolio diversifier, at a time when economic and political uncertainty present a multitude of risks for investors.
